Enclosed Skip Hire in Glasgow

Lockable skips with lids or doors that keep your waste secure and dry and stop passers-by adding their own rubbish, on Glasgow streets and sites.

An open skip on a busy Glasgow street can fill up faster than expected, and not always with your waste. Enclosed skips have a lockable lid or doors, so only you can load them. That keeps your waste secure, stops other people tipping into your skip and helps keep the contents dry through a wet West of Scotland week.

They’re popular with businesses, schools, offices and homeowners on through-roads, and anyone handling waste they’d rather keep out of sight, such as confidential paperwork awaiting secure disposal or valuable scrap metal.

Skips Glasgow arranges enclosed skips through our established network of licensed local waste partners, subject to local availability. Call 0333 121 1056 or use the quote form on this page to check what’s available for your postcode.

Why choose an enclosed skip?

Fly-tipping into open skips is a real problem in parts of Glasgow, especially where skips sit on busy streets or near shops overnight. Unwanted items such as mattresses, fridges or tyres can end up in your skip, and you may face extra charges for removing them. A lockable lid or doors removes that risk.

Keeping the contents dry matters too. Rainwater adds weight, which can push a load over its limit, and wet cardboard and paper are harder to recycle. An enclosed skip also looks tidier, which helps on residential streets, school grounds and customer-facing business premises.

Who uses enclosed skips

Enclosed skips suit a wide range of customers across the city, particularly anywhere a skip will be left unattended overnight or over a weekend:

  • Offices and businesses clearing old files ahead of secure disposal
  • Retailers and hospitality venues in the Merchant City and Finnieston
  • Schools, colleges and public buildings during holiday refurbishments
  • Homeowners on main roads where open skips attract rubbish
  • Sites storing scrap metal or other materials that could go missing

For more on security options, see lockable skip hire, or commercial skip hire for regular business collections.

Permits and placement

An enclosed skip follows the same rules as any other skip. On a driveway, car park or private yard there’s no permit needed. On a public road in Glasgow, a Glasgow City Council skip permit is required, normally applied for by the skip provider, and the skip must be lit and marked.

Leave enough clearance for the lid or doors to open fully, and keep the key somewhere safe for collection day. For help choosing a size, see our skip sizes guide, then request a quote via our contact page.

Who holds the key to an enclosed skip?

You do, for the duration of the hire. Keep the skip locked whenever you’re not loading it, and make sure it’s unlocked or the key is available on collection day so the driver can check the contents and lift the skip safely.

Do enclosed skips cost more than open skips?

They’re usually priced a little differently from standard skips because the containers are more specialised, and availability varies by area. Call 0333 121 1056 with your postcode and preferred size, and we’ll come back with a price from the local partner.

Can I put confidential paperwork in an enclosed skip?

An enclosed skip keeps paperwork out of sight while you clear an office, but a skip is not a secure destruction service. For data-bearing equipment, our secure data destruction partners can provide certificates of destruction on request.

Does an enclosed skip need a permit in Glasgow?

Only if it’s placed on a public road or pavement. The skip provider normally applies for a Glasgow City Council permit, which takes a few working days. On private land, such as a driveway or business car park, no permit is needed.
