Tipper lorries move loose bulk material – soil, stone, rubble and aggregates – and tip it out at the other end. They come in several sizes, and the right one depends on how much you need to shift and how easy it is to get a vehicle onto your site.
Skips Glasgow arranges operated tipper hire across Glasgow and surrounding areas through our established network of licensed local partners. From a small tipper for a tight back lane in Hyndland to a run of large lorries on a development site in East Kilbride, we match the vehicle to the job.
All tippers are supplied with a driver. You load the vehicle with your own machine, and the partner handles transport and disposal or delivery.
Choosing the right size of tipper
Smaller tippers are useful where access is restricted – narrow streets, lanes behind terraced houses or sites with low gates. They carry less, but can get where a larger lorry cannot.
Six-wheel tippers sit in the middle, while 8-wheel tipper hire is the usual choice for bulk excavation and haulage where there is room to manoeuvre. If you are not sure, tell us the site access and approximate volume and the partner will recommend a vehicle. Getting the size right first time avoids wasted trips and vehicles that cannot reach your site.
Tipper or grab lorry?
The key difference is loading. A tipper relies on your excavator, digger or loading shovel. A grab lorry has its own hydraulic arm and can load itself from a pile, even over a wall.
- Choose a tipper when you have a machine on site and a steady flow of material
- Choose a grab when the material is already piled and there is no machine
On some jobs a combination works well – tippers during the dig, then a grab to clear the last of the stockpile.
Planning tipper work in Glasgow
Busy roads, controlled parking zones and weight restrictions all affect how and when tippers can reach your site. Early starts can help avoid peak traffic on the M8 and M77, and many sites agree a loading area in advance.
Every load leaving your site is covered by a waste transfer note under the Duty of Care. Keep these for at least two years. For guidance on paperwork, see our page on waste transfer notes. If your site has set delivery windows, let us know when booking.

Tipper Hire – your questions answered
Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.
Do I need a licence to hire a tipper?
No. Tippers are supplied operated, so the partner provides a qualified driver. You just need a safe area for loading and tipping. The driver handles transport and tipping, while your team takes care of loading on site.
What size tipper do I need?
It depends on the volume and access. Smaller tippers suit restricted sites, while 8-wheelers suit bulk work. Share photos and volumes in the quote form and we will advise. Getting it right avoids wasted journeys.
Can a tipper deliver aggregates too?
Yes. Many partners deliver stone, sand and sub-base by tipper. See aggregate delivery – supply is subject to confirmation for your postcode. Ordering spoil removal and stone together can make planning simpler.
Do I need a road permit for a tipper?
Not usually, as the lorry does not stay on the road. If loading would block a road or footway for a long period, you may need to discuss traffic management with the council.
