Some things just do not fit in a bin or a car: a double wardrobe, a king-size mattress, a dining table, an old piano or a three-piece suite. Bulky waste collection is about those individual large items, picked up from inside your home or premises and removed without you having to lift them.

Glasgow tenement stairs make this harder than most cities, and narrow turns in a close are no place for a solo struggle with a sofa. Skips Glasgow arranges bulky item collections through Waste Cloud’s network of licensed local partners, with crews who carry items out safely and load them for recycling or reuse.

If you have a whole room or property to empty, a house clearance will be better value. For a handful of big items, request a quote here.

Upholstered furniture and POPs

Sofas, armchairs, sofa beds, footstools and other upholstered domestic seating may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in their foam and fabric. In Scotland these items must not be mixed with general waste or put in a skip; they need separate collection so they can be sent for high-temperature treatment.

Partners collect upholstered seating as its own item, keeping it apart from other waste on the vehicle. See POPs waste disposal for more detail. Non-upholstered items such as wooden chairs and bed frames do not need this treatment.

Council uplift or private collection?

Glasgow City Council and neighbouring councils run bulky uplift schemes for households, often with limits on the number and type of items and waiting times for a slot. A private collection can be useful when you need items gone by a specific date, have more than the council will take, need items carried from upstairs, or are a business or landlord whose waste the council cannot collect.

Many people use the council for one or two items and a private collection for the rest.

Appliances and electricals

Large appliances such as washing machines, cookers and dishwashers can usually be collected alongside furniture. Fridges and freezers need specialist handling because of the refrigerants and insulation foam they contain, so mention them when booking. TVs and other electricals are recycled through WEEE routes.

If you are buying a replacement appliance, check whether the retailer offers a take-back service for the old one – it may be the simplest option. Otherwise, the crew can collect it with the rest of your items.

Bulky Waste Collection – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

Can you take a sofa away in Glasgow?

Yes. Sofas and other upholstered seating are collected separately from other waste because they may contain POPs, which must be destroyed rather than landfilled. The crew will carry it out and load it for you.

Will the crew dismantle furniture to get it down the stairs?

Where it is needed to get an item out safely, crews can usually do basic dismantling, such as taking legs off a table or splitting a wardrobe. Mention very large or fixed items when booking.

Can you collect just one item?

Yes, single-item collections are possible, although combining several items in one visit is usually better value. Tell us what you have and the partner will quote accordingly, whether it is one item or several.

Is a skip a better option for bulky waste?

Bulky items take up lots of skip space, and upholstered seating cannot go in a skip at all. For a few large items, a collection is usually simpler. For a mix of furniture and general rubbish, see rubbish removal.
