Getting concrete from the mixer to the pour is often harder than getting it to the site. Glasgow’s tenement back courts, terraced rows and gap sites hemmed in by neighbouring buildings mean mixers frequently have to stay on the road. A concrete pump bridges that gap, moving concrete quickly and with far less labour than barrowing.
Skips Glasgow arranges concrete pump hire across Glasgow and surrounding areas through our network of local partners. We can also co-ordinate the pump with your concrete delivery so the two arrive together.
There are two main types of pump – line pumps and boom pumps – and choosing the right one depends on the size of your pour and the route the concrete has to take. Call 0333 121 1056 or use the quote form and we will help you decide.
Line pump or boom pump?
A line pump pushes concrete through hoses that can be run along the ground, through a close, round corners and into a back garden. It suits smaller pours such as extension footings, garden slabs and internal floors where the route is long but the volume is modest.
A boom pump is mounted on a truck with a folding arm that reaches over buildings, walls and other obstacles. It handles larger volumes at a faster rate and is common on commercial and new-build sites.
- Long, winding route and small volume: line pump
- Large pour or need to reach over a building: boom pump
Planning a pumped pour
The pump operator will need to know the volume, the mix and the distance or height from the mixer to the pour. Some mixes are better suited to pumping than others, so mention the pump when ordering concrete.
Think too about where the pump will set up. Boom pumps need firm, level ground for their stabilisers and space to extend. On public roads, parking restrictions and controlled parking zones may affect where vehicles can stand – our partners can advise on what is needed for your street.
Ideal for
- Rear garden pours
- Tenement back courts
- Upper-floor slabs
- Large commercial pours
- Sites with restricted access
Concrete Pump Hire – your questions answered
Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.
Does the pump come with an operator?
Yes. Concrete pumps are supplied with a trained operator who sets up, runs and cleans down the pump. Your team places and finishes the concrete as it is delivered.
How far can a line pump reach?
Line pumps can push concrete a considerable distance through hoses, though the exact reach depends on the pump, the mix and the route. Give us the distance from the road to your pour when you enquire.
Can you book the concrete and the pump together?
Yes. We can arrange both through local partners so the timing lines up, which avoids a mixer waiting for a pump or the other way round.
Will a pump work for a tenement back court?
Often, yes. A line pump can run hoses through a close or pend into a back court, while a boom pump can sometimes reach over the building. Access and space will determine the best option.
