Most everyday household, garden and building waste can go in a skip. But some items are banned from general skips by law or for safety reasons, and loading them can lead to extra charges, a refused collection or a skip left on your street longer than planned.

This guide covers the main rules for skips hired in Glasgow and the surrounding areas through our licensed local partners. The partner delivering your skip will confirm anything specific to your load. Remember that you are responsible under the Duty of Care for describing your waste accurately, so it pays to check before anything goes in.

If something you need to get rid of is on the not-accepted list, we can usually arrange a separate collection. Mention it when you request a quote or call 0333 121 1056.

Sofas, armchairs and POPs

Upholstered domestic seating – sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining chairs with padded seats, footstools and similar – may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs), chemicals once used in foams and fabrics. Waste containing POPs must be destroyed rather than landfilled or recycled with general waste, so these items must not go in a general skip.

They need separate collection so they can be sent for appropriate treatment. Set them aside and ask about POPs waste disposal. Mattresses, carpets and curtains are handled differently – check with us when booking.

Plasterboard

Plasterboard is gypsum-based and must be kept separate from general and biodegradable waste, because when it breaks down alongside them it can produce harmful gases. Unless agreed in advance, it should not go in a general skip.

The good news is that clean plasterboard can be recycled. We can arrange a separate skip, bag or collection through plasterboard recycling, or agree a segregated load with the local partner. Keeping it separate also stops it contaminating other waste that could otherwise be recycled.

Special waste and electricals

In Scotland, hazardous waste is called special waste. It includes asbestos, most paints and solvents, chemicals, oils, fuels, fluorescent tubes and many batteries. Special waste must never go in a skip. It is moved under a consignment note by licensed carriers, who provide the right documentation. See our hazardous waste disposal services.

Electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) – fridges, freezers, TVs, monitors, computers and small appliances – also needs separate handling. Our WEEE collection services are primarily for commercial quantities, and items containing batteries must be declared when you ask for a quote.

Heavy waste and loading

Soil, rubble, hardcore and concrete are accepted, but weight is the limit. Heavy waste is normally restricted to skips of 8 yards or smaller. Load evenly, keep everything below the rim and never add liquids. Small amounts of damp waste are fine; large quantities of liquid are not. Overfilled or overweight skips may not be lifted until they are made safe. For larger amounts of soil or hardcore, grab hire is often a better option than several skips. Ask us if you are unsure which size suits your load.

What Can Go in a Skip? – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

Can I put a mattress in a skip?

Mattresses are not upholstered seating, so they are not covered by the same POPs rules, but some partners handle them separately. Tell us when you book and we will confirm with the local partner.

Why can’t my old sofa go in the skip?

Upholstered seating may contain persistent organic pollutants, which must be destroyed rather than mixed with general waste. Sofas and armchairs need a separate collection, which we can usually arrange alongside your skip.

Can paint tins go in a skip?

Empty, fully dried-out tins may be accepted, but liquid paint is not allowed. Many paints and solvents are special waste in Scotland. See paint disposal for safe options. Ask us if you are unsure.

What happens if I put a banned item in the skip?

The partner may remove it and charge for separate disposal, or the collection may be delayed until it is taken out. It is always cheaper and quicker to ask first.

Can I put garden soil in a large skip?

Heavy waste such as soil and rubble is normally limited to skips of 8 yards or smaller, because larger skips would be too heavy to lift safely when full. If you are unsure, tell us what you are clearing.

Is asbestos ever allowed in a skip?

No. Asbestos is special waste and must be handled by licensed specialists under a consignment note. We can help arrange asbestos disposal. Never break up suspected asbestos yourself. Keep the area undisturbed meanwhile.
