Whether it is your first time hiring a skip or you manage waste across several Glasgow sites, you probably have a few questions. This page gathers the ones we hear most often, covering skip sizes, council permits, what can and cannot go in a skip, collections, booking and the paperwork that comes with your waste.

All Skips Glasgow services are delivered through our network of licensed local partners across Glasgow and surrounding areas, so some details – such as hire periods and delivery slots – can vary by postcode. Where the answer depends on your site, we have pointed you to a more detailed guide. If your question is not answered here, call 0333 121 1056 or send a message through our contact page.

Still need help choosing?

If you are weighing up options, a few of our guides go into more depth. Skip sizes compares capacities, what can go in a skip covers restricted items, and waste types explains which service suits each kind of waste. For the booking process from start to finish, see how it works.

Frequently Asked Questions – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

What size skip do I need?

As a rough guide, a 4-yard skip holds around 30–40 bin bags, a 6-yard around 50–60 and an 8-yard around 60–80. Larger 12–16 yard skips suit light, bulky waste only. See skip sizes for more.

Can I put soil and rubble in any skip?

Heavy waste such as soil, rubble and hardcore is normally limited to skips of 8 yards or smaller, because larger skips would become too heavy to lift safely.

Do I need a permit for a skip in Glasgow?

Only if the skip goes on a public road or pavement. In Glasgow this is a Glasgow City Council skip permit, normally applied for by the skip provider. Skips on driveways or private land do not need one.

How long does a skip permit take?

Allow a few working days for the council to process a permit. Neighbouring councils such as Renfrewshire or South Lanarkshire have their own processes, so timings can differ.

Does a skip on the road need lights?

Yes. Skips on a public road must be lit and clearly marked so they are visible at night. Your skip provider will advise on the requirements.

What can’t go in a skip?

Common exclusions include asbestos, plasterboard (unless agreed separately), tyres, gas bottles, batteries, paints and chemicals, fridges, TVs and other electricals, fluorescent tubes, clinical waste, oils and upholstered seating.

Why can’t I put a sofa in a skip?

Upholstered domestic seating may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and must be collected separately rather than mixed with general waste. See POPs waste disposal.

Can you take plasterboard?

Plasterboard should be kept separate from general skip waste. It can be collected separately or, by prior agreement, in a dedicated container. Ask when booking.

What if I don’t have room for a skip?

A wait-and-load skip, a man-with-van collection or a grab lorry can remove waste without leaving a skip on site – useful for tenement streets with tight parking.

Can I get a skip the same day?

Same-day and next-day deliveries may be possible where locally available, subject to partner availability and any permit needed.

Can I get a skip exchanged when it is full?

Yes. An exchange swaps your full skip for an empty one in a single visit, which is ideal for ongoing building work. See skip exchange.

Do you collect waste without a skip?

Yes. We arrange rubbish removal, bulky waste collections, house and office clearances, and regular commercial bin collections across Glasgow.

How do I book and pay?

You can book by calling 0333 121 1056 or online through our quote form, which is powered by WastePrime. Payment arrangements are confirmed when you book.

Who delivers my skip?

Your skip or collection is fulfilled by one of our licensed local partners – an established operator serving your area of Glasgow.

Will I get a waste transfer note?

Yes. For ordinary waste, the partner provides a waste transfer note. Businesses should keep these for at least two years.

How is hazardous waste handled in Scotland?

In Scotland, hazardous waste is called special waste and moves with a consignment note under the Special Waste Regulations. Our partners arrange the correct documentation – see special waste documentation.

Do businesses have to separate recycling?

Yes. Under the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012, businesses must separate dry recyclables – plastic, metal, glass, paper and card – and food businesses producing over 5kg of food waste a week must separate it.

Is my waste recycled?

Partners take waste to licensed facilities where as much as possible is sorted and recovered. Keeping materials separate on site improves recycling.
