Events produce a lot of waste in a short space of time: food packaging, cups, bottles, cardboard from traders, food waste and the leftovers of the build and break-down. Planning how that waste is contained, separated and removed is part of running a safe, well-presented event – and often a condition of using a park or venue.

Skips Glasgow arranges event waste services across Glasgow and the surrounding area through Waste Cloud’s network of licensed local partners. That can include wheelie bins for general waste and recycling, food waste containers for caterers, skips or RORO containers for build and break-down, and collections during and after the event.

Whether it is a community gala in a local park, a market in the Merchant City or a corporate event on the Clyde waterfront, tell us about your event and we will help put together a plan.

Planning your event waste

Start with the basics: expected attendance, duration, whether food and drink are sold, and how many traders will be on site. These shape how many bins you need, where they go and how often they must be emptied. It is also worth checking what your venue or the council requires in your event plan.

  • bins grouped as recycling stations next to food and bar areas
  • separate bins for trader cardboard and glass
  • a back-of-house compound for skips and bulk containers
  • clear access for collection vehicles, avoiding crowd routes

Recycling and food waste

Under the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, dry recyclables must be kept separate from general waste, and food businesses producing more than 5kg of food waste a week need separate food waste collection. At events, clearly labelled bins and a word with traders before the day make a big difference to how much can be recycled. See food waste collection and glass collection for the bins involved. Volunteers or litter pickers stationed at recycling points can help reduce contamination at busier events.

Build, break-down and clear-up

Staging, signage, timber, pallets and packaging all build up during set-up and break-down. A skip or RORO container in a secure compound handles this, followed by a final loaded collection to clear any remaining waste so the site is handed back in good condition. As organiser, you are responsible for the waste, so keep the waste transfer notes for your records.

Agree the timings for removing containers with the venue, as many parks and public spaces expect the site cleared within a set period after the event.

Event Waste Management – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

How many bins do I need for my event?

It depends on attendance, duration and whether food and drink are sold. The partner will suggest numbers and sizes based on your event details, and can arrange collections during multi-day events so bins do not overflow.

Can you deliver bins to a park or open space in Glasgow?

Yes, subject to access. Collection vehicles need a safe route and firm ground, and many parks have rules on vehicle movements. Share the site plan and any venue requirements when you request a quote.

Who is responsible for waste from food traders?

This should be agreed in advance. Many organisers provide central bins for traders, while others require traders to remove their own waste. Either way, food waste and recyclables should be kept separate from general waste.

Do we get paperwork for event waste?

Yes. As the waste producer, the organiser receives a waste transfer note, which may be needed for your event plan or for the venue. Keep it for at least two years.
