Fire Extinguisher Disposal in Glasgow

Collection of expired, discharged and unwanted fire extinguishers from offices, shops, venues and sites across Glasgow, through licensed local partners.

Fire Extinguisher Disposal in Skip Hire Glasgow

Fire extinguishers are pressurised containers, and many hold powders, foams or chemicals that should not end up in landfill. When units reach the end of their service life, fail an inspection or are replaced during a refit, they need to be disposed of properly rather than thrown in a skip.

Skips Glasgow arranges fire extinguisher disposal across Glasgow through licensed partners who can depressurise units safely and send the contents and cylinders for appropriate treatment and metal recycling. Where contents are classed as special waste, the partner provides the appropriate consignment note.

Please share safety data sheets (SDS) where available, photographs, approximate quantities, packaging details and the collection address via the quote form on this page. A simple count by type (water, foam, powder, CO2, wet chemical) is ideal.

Why extinguishers need specialist disposal

A charged extinguisher can discharge or rupture if crushed in a skip lorry. The contents also vary: dry powder, foam concentrates and wet chemical agents need suitable treatment, and some older foam extinguishers may contain fluorinated chemicals that require specialist handling.

Our partners make the units safe, separate the contents from the cylinder and send the metal for recycling where possible. Units that are still within their service life may sometimes be refurbished by a fire safety provider, so it is worth checking with your servicing company before disposing of newer extinguishers.

Refits, office moves and venue upgrades

Extinguishers often build up during an office clearance, a shop refit in the city centre or a hospitality upgrade in the Merchant City or Finnieston. Rather than leaving old units in a back store, gather them in one place, note how many of each type you have and arrange a single collection.

  • Keep units upright with safety pins and tags in place
  • Don’t try to discharge them yourself
  • Keep damaged or corroded units apart and mention them

Store them somewhere secure until collection so they are not tampered with.

Arranging collection

Collections are available across Glasgow and surrounding areas, subject to partner availability. Facilities managers looking after several sites can request collections from multiple addresses. Send your details through the quote form or contact us on 0333 121 1056. Other pressurised items are covered on our gas bottle disposal page.

The licensed partner provides the appropriate waste documentation for the collection. Keep it with your fire safety and maintenance records so you can show that old equipment was disposed of responsibly.

Fire Extinguisher Disposal – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

Can I put a fire extinguisher in a skip?

No. Extinguishers are pressurised and their contents need specialist treatment. They must be kept out of skips and general bins and collected separately. Set them aside and mention them when you book any other collection.

Can I discharge an extinguisher before disposal?

We do not recommend it. Discharging powder, foam or chemicals releases them into the environment and can be a hazard. Leave units intact and let the licensed partner make them safe.

Do you collect from multiple sites across Glasgow?

Yes. If you manage several premises, list each address with the number and type of extinguishers and our partners will quote accordingly, subject to availability in each area. Grouping collections on the same day can help keep things efficient.

What do you need for a quote?

A count by type and size, photographs of the units and labels, notes on any damaged units and the collection address. Add these to the quote form on this page.
