Upholstered domestic seating, such as sofas, armchairs and sofa beds, may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These chemicals were used in some flame retardants applied to foam and fabric, and they do not break down easily in the environment.

Because of this, upholstered seating must not go in a general skip or be mixed with other waste. It needs to be collected separately and sent for destruction, typically through high-temperature incineration, rather than landfill or recycling.

Skips Glasgow arranges separate POPs waste collections across Glasgow and the surrounding towns through licensed partners, for householders, landlords, letting agents and businesses alike. Please share photographs, the number and type of items, which floor they are on and the collection address via the quote form on this page.

What counts as POPs waste

The rules apply to upholstered seating of a domestic type, whether it comes from a home, a rented flat, a hotel or a business clearing furniture. Typical items include:

  • Sofas, sofa beds and armchairs
  • Upholstered kitchen and dining chairs
  • Footstools, pouffes and futons
  • Home office chairs with padded seats
  • Seat cushions and bean bags

Mattresses, curtains and carpets are handled separately and are not covered by the same requirements, but they still need the right route, so mention them when you enquire.

Keep sofas out of your skip

When clearing a flat in Partick or a house in Bearsden, it is tempting to put the old sofa in the skip. Doing so contaminates the whole load and can lead to it being rejected or reclassified. Instead, keep upholstered seating to one side and our partners can collect it separately, often alongside your house clearance or bulky waste collection.

Cutting a sofa up to fit it in does not help either, as the foam and fabric are the parts that matter. Just let us know how many items you have when you book.

Tenements and access

Getting a sofa down a tenement stair can be the hardest part of the job. Let us know the floor level, whether there is a lift, the width of the close and any parking restrictions on the street. Our partners will plan the collection to suit, including the right number of people to carry larger pieces safely. If items can be brought down to the close entrance or back court beforehand, mention it, as it can make the job quicker. Request a quote using the form or contact us on 0333 121 1056.

POPs Waste Disposal – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

Can I put a sofa in a skip in Glasgow?

No. Sofas and other upholstered domestic seating may contain POPs and must be kept separate from general waste. Our partners can collect them on their own instead, so set them aside when you book your skip.

What are POPs?

Persistent organic pollutants are chemicals that last a long time in the environment and can build up in living things. Some were used in flame retardants on upholstery foam and fabric, which is why upholstered seating needs separate handling.

Are mattresses POPs waste?

Mattresses are not covered by the same requirements as upholstered seating, but they still should not go in a general skip. Mention them in your enquiry and our partners can usually collect them separately.

Can you collect from an upper-floor tenement flat?

Often, yes. Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and any tight turns in the stair. Clear photos of the items help our partners plan the right crew size.
