Recycled Type 1 is a sub-base made by crushing and screening construction and demolition material such as concrete, brick and stone. It is graded so it compacts into a firm base, and for many jobs it does the same work as quarried Type 1.
Skips Glasgow arranges recycled Type 1 delivery across Glasgow and surrounding areas through licensed local partners, many of whom process hardcore collected from sites across the city. Delivery is by tipper or bulk bag where available, subject to confirmation for your postcode.
Choosing recycled material keeps inert waste in use and reduces the need for new quarrying – a straightforward way to make a project more sustainable. See our full aggregate delivery range for other materials.
Where recycled Type 1 works well
Recycled sub-base is widely used on domestic and commercial jobs, including:
- Driveway and patio sub-bases
- Yards, car parks and hardstandings
- Shed and garage bases
- Haul roads and temporary site access
- Backfilling and general fill
For engineered works or adopted roads, check the project specification. Some specifications call for virgin Type 1 aggregate, while others accept recycled material that meets the required grading. If in doubt, check with your engineer, architect or client before ordering so there are no surprises on site. Our partners can tell you which product they supply.
The sustainability case
Scotland has strong targets on reducing waste going to landfill, and construction is a major source of inert material. Crushing that material back into sub-base closes the loop: rubble from a demolition in the East End can end up as the base of a new driveway in Paisley.
Using recycled aggregate can also support sustainability reporting on commercial projects. If you need information on the source of the material, ask when ordering and the partner will advise what they can provide.
Clear out and fill in one plan
Many projects start by breaking out an old surface. Our hardcore removal service takes away brick and concrete for recycling, while recycled Type 1 can come back in for the new base.
Tell us the area, the depth you need and your access, and we will check supply and delivery options for your postcode. Use the contact page or call 0333 121 1056. Coordinating both jobs can reduce the number of separate visits to your site and keep the programme moving. Where a single partner handles both, it can also simplify the paperwork.

Recycled Type 1 – your questions answered
Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.
What is recycled Type 1 made from?
It is produced by crushing and screening recycled construction material, typically concrete, brick and stone, into a graded sub-base that compacts well. Using it keeps inert material out of landfill and reduces quarrying.
Is recycled Type 1 as good as virgin Type 1?
For many domestic and commercial uses it performs well. Where a project has a specification, follow it – some engineered works call for virgin material. Your installer can advise if you are unsure.
Is recycled Type 1 cheaper?
It is often competitively priced, but costs vary by supplier and location. We will quote for your postcode and can compare it with virgin Type 1 if you wish. Ask when you enquire.
Does recycled sub-base contain rubbish?
Good recycled aggregate is screened to remove timber, plastic and other contaminants. Small traces can occur. If appearance matters, discuss it with us before ordering. Partners can advise on the typical quality of their product.
