Not all soil is the same, and how it is classified decides where it can go and what it costs to remove. Clean topsoil from a garden in Giffnock is a very different material from made ground on a former industrial plot near the Clyde, and Glasgow has plenty of both.

Skips Glasgow handles soil removal enquiries of every kind, working through licensed local partners who can collect by grab lorry, tipper or skip depending on volume and access. We help you work out what you have, whether testing is sensible, and which route is the most practical.

If you simply need spoil cleared from an active dig, our muck away service is set up for exactly that. This page is for anyone with questions about the soil itself.

Clean soil and topsoil

Uncontaminated natural soil is the simplest to deal with and is frequently screened and reused rather than landfilled. Garden re-levelling, lawn removal, raised-bed builds and patio preparation all generate this kind of material.

For a few tonnes, an 8-yard skip or smaller may be enough – heavy waste like soil is normally limited to skips of that size. For larger volumes, a grab lorry is usually more efficient, collecting the pile in one visit without a permit. Keep turf, roots and stones in with the soil if you like, but leave out rubbish, timber and plastic so the load stays clean.

Suspected contaminated soil

Glasgow’s industrial past means older sites can contain ash, oil, fuel residues, slag or other made ground. Signs include unusual colours, a chemical or fuel smell, buried debris or a known history of garages, works or depots on the land.

Soil like this cannot simply go to an inert facility. It may need laboratory testing to classify it, and if it is hazardous it is treated as special waste in Scotland, moving with a consignment note. Our partners can advise on sampling and arrange the correct disposal route. For more detail, see contaminated soil disposal.

Why testing can save money

When soil classification is unknown, receiving sites may treat it cautiously, which usually means higher disposal costs. A straightforward test can show that material is inert or non-hazardous, opening up cheaper recovery routes.

On development sites, a site investigation report may already exist – share it with us, as it can speed up classification. On domestic jobs testing is rarely needed unless something looks or smells wrong. If in doubt, describe the soil and send photos through the quote form, and the partner will advise before anything is loaded.

Soil Removal – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

How do I know if my soil is contaminated?

Warning signs include oily sheen, fuel or chemical smells, black ash layers, buried debris and a history of industrial or garage use. If you notice any of these, tell us before booking so the partner can advise on testing.

Is contaminated soil classed as special waste in Scotland?

If testing shows it is hazardous, yes. Special waste is regulated by SEPA and must move with a consignment note rather than a standard waste transfer note. Our licensed partners provide the correct documentation.

Can I put soil in a large skip?

Usually not. Heavy waste like soil is normally limited to skips of 8 yards or smaller because of weight limits. For bigger volumes a grab lorry is generally more practical.

Will clean soil be recycled?

Clean, natural soil is commonly screened and reused for landscaping, restoration or as fill, depending on the receiving site. Keeping it free of rubbish improves the chances of recovery. Your waste transfer note will record the material collected.

Do you remove soil from back gardens with no vehicle access?

Often, yes. A grab arm can reach over walls and fences, and partners can advise on other options for enclosed back courts. Photos of the access help us give an accurate answer.
