In Glasgow, “uplift” is the word most people use for getting waste taken away, and a private waste uplift is exactly that: you gather everything in one place, and a licensed partner vehicle comes at a booked time to lift it.
It suits people who have already done the sorting and just need the pile gone – bags at the kerb after a clear-out, a heap in the driveway after a renovation, or a stack of material in a commercial yard. Council special uplifts are limited to certain household items and can involve waiting for a slot; a private uplift is booked around you and can take a wider range of waste, including trade waste, which the council will not collect.
Skips Glasgow arranges uplifts through Waste Cloud’s network of licensed local partners. Request a quote or use the form on this page.
Private uplift or council special uplift?
Glasgow City Council and neighbouring councils offer bulky uplifts for households, but they come with rules on what and how much they will take, and they do not collect business or builders’ waste. A private uplift is useful when:
- you have more than the council allowance or a mix of waste types
- the waste includes DIY or renovation rubble
- you are a landlord, factor or business
- you need it gone by a certain date
Check your council’s current scheme first if you only have a couple of household items.
Making an uplift quick and affordable
Uplifts are priced mainly on volume and type, so a little preparation goes a long way. Gather the waste in one accessible spot, ideally on private ground such as a driveway, yard or bin store. Keep heavy materials like rubble separate from light items, and set aside anything that cannot be mixed – electricals, upholstered seating and hazardous products.
If the waste is still inside the property and you would rather not move it, book a man-with-van collection instead and the crew will carry it out.
Uplifts for factors and businesses
Property factors managing tenement blocks often need uplifts of dumped items from closes and back courts, and businesses use them after clear-outs or refits. Commercial uplifts come with a waste transfer note to cover your Duty of Care. For a recurring need, a scheduled trade waste collection is usually more cost-effective.
For shared areas, it is worth agreeing in advance who is paying and exactly which items are included, so the crew is not left guessing what belongs to whom. Photos of the pile make quoting quicker and avoid surprises on the day.

Can waste for an uplift be left on the pavement?
It is best not to leave waste on a public pavement or road, as it can cause an obstruction and may be treated as fly-tipping. Keep it on private ground until the vehicle arrives, or have the crew collect it from inside.
Will you uplift builders’ waste from a house renovation?
How much notice do you need?
Next-day uplifts are often possible where locally available, but it depends on the area and partner workload. Booking a few days ahead gives the most flexibility on timing, particularly at busy times such as the end of the month when tenancies change over.
Can you do an uplift for a whole tenement close?
Yes, factors and owners’ associations regularly book uplifts for shared areas. One contact should arrange it and confirm who is responsible for payment and what items are included. Get in touch to arrange it.
