Skip Sizes for Glasgow Jobs

From compact 4-yard skips to 16-yard skips for bulky waste, find the right size for your Glasgow project and avoid paying for space you don't need.

Choosing the right skip size is the easiest way to keep a clear-out on budget. Too small and you’ll need a second skip; too big and you’re paying for empty space, and possibly blocking more of a Glasgow street than you need to. This guide covers the builders’ skips our partners supply across Glasgow, from 4 yards up to 16 yards.

Skip sizes are measured in cubic yards, and a rough count of black bin bags is the handiest way to picture them. The other key question is what you’re throwing out: heavy material like soil and rubble has weight limits that restrict which skips can be used.

If you’re still unsure after reading, call 0333 121 1056 and describe the job. We’ll suggest a size and arrange it through the licensed local partner covering your area. For general information on booking, see our main skip hire in Glasgow page.

Compare skip sizes

As a rough guide, here is how each size tends to be used on Glasgow jobs. Bin bag figures are approximate and depend on how well the skip is loaded.

  • 4-yard skip (around 30–40 bags) – small bathroom refits, garden tidy-ups, single-room clear-outs
  • 6-yard skip (around 50–60 bags) – soil, rubble, DIY and small building jobs
  • 8-yard skip (around 60–80 bags) – kitchen refits and house renovations; the largest size for heavy waste
  • 12-yard skip (around 100–120 bags) – house clearances and bulky, light waste
  • 14-yard skip (around 120–140 bags) – shop and office refits
  • 16-yard skip (around 140–160 bags) – large volumes of light, bulky waste

Heavy waste or bulky waste?

Volume is only half the story. A skip lorry can only lift so much, and a skip full of soil, concrete or hardcore weighs far more than one full of cardboard and old furniture. That’s why heavy waste is normally limited to skips of 8 yards or smaller, and the larger 12, 14 and 16-yard skips are for light, bulky material only.

If your job produces a lot of heavy waste – digging out a driveway in Newton Mearns or breaking up a back garden in Rutherglen, for example – two smaller skips or an exchange is often the better approach. For very large amounts, grab hire can be more efficient than a skip.

Fitting a skip at a Glasgow address

Think about where the skip will go before settling on a size. A driveway in Bishopbriggs or Giffnock can often take a larger skip with no permit needed. On a narrow West End street or in a controlled parking zone, a smaller skip may be easier to place, and anything on the road needs a council permit, normally applied for by the skip provider.

For bigger commercial or construction volumes, our partners also supply RORO containers from 20 yards upwards. If security is a concern, ask about enclosed skips with lockable lids or doors. Once you’ve chosen, request a quote via our contact page.

What size skip do I need for a kitchen refit?

An 8-yard skip is the usual choice for a full kitchen refit, as it handles old units, worktops, tiles and some plaster or rubble. A smaller kitchen in a Glasgow tenement flat may fit in a 6-yard skip, especially if the units are broken down before loading.

Why can't I put soil in a 12-yard skip?

It’s down to weight. A 12-yard skip filled with soil or rubble would be heavier than a skip lorry can safely lift and carry. Heavy waste is normally limited to skips of 8 yards or smaller, so larger skips are kept for light, bulky material such as packaging, furniture and timber.

Can I fit a big skip on a tenement street?

Sometimes, but space and parking are often tight in areas like Partick, Dennistoun or Govanhill. A skip on the road needs a council permit and must not block access. Smaller skips are usually easier to place, and wait-and-load is an option where a skip can’t stay on the street.

What if I choose the wrong size?

If your skip fills up early, an exchange can usually be arranged, where the full skip is swapped for an empty one. Don’t overfill: waste must sit level with the top of the skip so it can be lifted and transported safely. If in doubt, call 0333 121 1056 before booking.
