Builders’ Skip Hire in Glasgow
Skips for joiners, builders and renovation trades across Glasgow, sized for rubble and mixed building waste.

Builders’ skips are the workhorse of small building jobs in Glasgow – extensions in Newton Mearns, tenement flat refurbs in Dennistoun, driveway replacements in Kirkintilloch. Skips Glasgow arranges trade skips across the city and surrounding towns through licensed local partners.
The 8-yard skip is the classic builders’ skip, large enough for a good volume of mixed waste while still light enough to lift when loaded with rubble. Smaller 6-yard skips suit tight streets and shorter jobs. Where a job runs for weeks, exchanges keep the site clear, and the local partner normally sorts the road permit if the skip has to go on the street. Every load is covered by a waste transfer note.

Sizing for building waste
Building waste is heavy. Brick, concrete, tiles and soil can push a skip to its weight limit well before it looks full, which is why heavy material is normally limited to skips of 8 yards or smaller. An 8-yard skip is the usual choice for mixed building waste, while a 6-yard skip suits smaller jobs or streets where space is tight.
For larger quantities of soil or hardcore, a grab lorry or muck-away service is often more efficient than repeated skips. See our grab hire options.
Working on Glasgow streets
Many trade jobs in Glasgow are on terraced streets and tenement rows where the skip has to go on the road. The local partner normally applies for the Glasgow City Council permit, or the neighbouring council’s permit if you are working in Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire or elsewhere. Allow a few working days, and remember a skip on the road must be lit and marked.
Keep the skip within the permitted area and do not overload it. A skip that is too heavy or too full may not be collected until it is made safe.
Separate waste where it pays
Keeping clean hardcore or metal separate from mixed waste can make disposal simpler and improve recycling. Plasterboard must be kept apart from general waste unless agreed in advance, and asbestos must never go in a builders’ skip. If you are unsure about a material, ask before you load it. Clean hardcore can often be recycled into aggregate, and scrap metal is readily recycled, so a little sorting on site goes a long way. For larger quantities of gypsum waste, ask about plasterboard recycling.

Builders’ Skip Hire – your questions answered
Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.
Which skip is best for rubble on a Glasgow job?
An 8-yard skip is the most popular choice for mixed building waste. If the waste is almost all heavy rubble or soil, a 6-yard or smaller skip may be better, as weight limits are reached quickly. For large volumes, consider grab hire.
Can I put plasterboard in a builders’ skip?
Not with general waste, unless agreed in advance. Plasterboard needs to be kept separate so it can be recycled properly. We can arrange a separate skip or collection – see plasterboard recycling.
Who arranges the skip permit?
The local partner normally applies for the road permit on your behalf. Give us the exact address and position and allow a few working days. If the skip can go on a driveway or private land, no permit is needed.
Can I swap a full skip for an empty one?
Yes, a skip exchange is usually available on request, subject to availability. The partner removes the full skip and leaves an empty one in the same visit, so work can carry on.
