Plasterboard is everywhere in Glasgow refurbishments, from stud walls in converted tenements to ceilings in new-build flats and office fit-outs in the city centre. When it comes out, it needs to be kept apart from general waste.
Plasterboard is made mainly of gypsum. It is not classed as hazardous, but when gypsum is landfilled alongside biodegradable waste it can produce hydrogen sulphide gas. That is why it must be segregated from mixed waste and is not normally accepted in a general skip unless agreed in advance.
Skips Glasgow arranges segregated plasterboard collections through licensed partners, who send clean gypsum for recycling where possible. Please share photographs, approximate quantities, whether the board is clean or mixed with other materials and the collection address via the quote form on this page.
Why plasterboard has to be separated
Gypsum contains sulphate. In landfill, where it mixes with food, wood and other biodegradable waste in damp conditions, it can produce hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas with a strong smell. Keeping plasterboard separate prevents this and allows the gypsum to be recovered and reused.
Our partners will confirm the right arrangement for your job, which may be a dedicated skip for plasterboard only or a separate collection alongside your builders’ skip. Recovered gypsum can be used again in new plasterboard and other products.
Keeping plasterboard clean
Clean plasterboard is easier to recycle, and heavily contaminated loads may need a different route. Where possible:
- Keep offcuts and strip-out board in one place
- Remove as much timber, metal and insulation as practical
- Keep board dry and covered
- Tell us about wallpaper, tiles or heavy contamination
If plasterboard is from a building that may contain asbestos, have it checked before removal. Some older boards and textured coatings can contain asbestos and need specialist handling, as explained on our asbestos disposal page.
Refurbishments, fit-outs and new builds
Our partners collect plasterboard from homes, offices, shops and building sites across Glasgow and surrounding areas, subject to availability. Fit-out contractors working on Merchant City and Finnieston venues, house builders on the edge of the city and joiners on tenement refurbishments all use this service. Request a quote through the form or contact us on 0333 121 1056. Choose a size on our skip sizes page.
On busy sites, a dedicated plasterboard skip or a regular uplift saves space and stops offcuts drifting into the general waste.

Plasterboard Recycling – your questions answered
Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.
Can I put plasterboard in my skip in Glasgow?
Not in a general mixed load unless it has been agreed in advance. Plasterboard needs to be kept separate. Tell us about it when booking and our partners will arrange a dedicated skip or a separate collection.
Is plasterboard hazardous waste?
No, plasterboard is not classed as hazardous. It is grouped with specialist waste because the gypsum must be segregated from biodegradable waste to prevent hydrogen sulphide forming in landfill, and so it can be recycled.
Can I mix plasterboard with rubble?
It is better not to. Mixing reduces the chance of recycling and may affect how the load is accepted. Keep plasterboard apart from rubble, timber and general waste wherever possible.
What details do you need?
Photos of the plasterboard, an approximate volume or number of sheets, whether it is clean or mixed, how it is stored and the collection address. Add these to the quote form or contact us.
