Managing waste well is about more than getting the bins emptied. Glasgow businesses need to separate recyclables, keep the right documents and deal with occasional awkward items, all without wasting money on oversized or half-empty containers.

Skips Glasgow helps businesses across the city and surrounding areas put a sensible waste set-up in place, delivered through Waste Cloud’s network of licensed local partners. That might be a handful of wheelie bins for a single shop, or coordinated collections across several sites.

Whether you run a restaurant in Finnieston, a retail chain with branches in Paisley and East Kilbride, or a warehouse in Hillington, the principles are the same.

Start with a waste review

A simple look at what you throw away is the best starting point. Walk through your premises and note what ends up in each bin, how full bins are at collection, and any items you struggle to get rid of. Common findings include:

  • Recyclable card and plastics going into general waste
  • Bins collected half-empty, or overflowing before collection
  • Glass or food waste mixed with other waste
  • Old equipment or furniture with nowhere to go

The partner can then suggest bin sizes, streams and frequencies to match.

Segregation and Scottish requirements

The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 require businesses to separate paper, card, plastics, metals and glass for recycling, with glass kept apart from other materials. Food businesses producing over 5kg of food waste a week must have it collected separately.

For most premises that means general waste, mixed recycling, glass and, where relevant, food waste. Clear labelling and staff briefing make the system work day to day.

Documentation and Duty of Care

Every business has a Duty of Care for its waste. Use a registered carrier, describe your waste accurately and keep waste transfer notes for at least two years. Hazardous items – known as special waste in Scotland – move with a consignment note instead.

Skips Glasgow is a trading style of Waste Cloud Ltd, SEPA waste carrier registration WCR/R/3008642. Partners provide the documentation for each service. Our guides to waste transfer notes and SEPA waste compliance explain more.

Multi-site and one-off needs

If you manage several premises across Glasgow and neighbouring council areas, a single point of contact can make life easier – one enquiry covering different bin set-ups at each site. Beyond regular bins, we can arrange one-off services such as office clearance, skip hire during a refit, and collections of electrical or special waste through appropriately licensed partners.

Bringing these services together through one contact means fewer suppliers to manage and more consistent documentation across your sites.

Waste Management for Businesses – your questions answered

Can’t see your question? Call 0333 121 1056 or send us a message.

What are my main waste obligations as a Glasgow business?

In short: separate dry recyclables (with glass kept apart), separate food waste if you are a food business producing over 5kg a week, use a registered waste carrier, and keep waste transfer notes for at least two years. Special waste needs consignment notes.

Can you help us reduce the number of bins we have?

Often, yes. Reviewing what goes in each bin and how full they are at collection can reveal oversized bins or unnecessary uplifts. Better recycling can also reduce general waste volumes. The partner can suggest changes once they know your premises.

Can you cover sites outside Glasgow City Council’s area?

Partners cover Glasgow and surrounding areas including Renfrewshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire. Tell us each site address and we will confirm coverage. Coverage depends on partner routes.

What about electrical items and hazardous waste?

These can’t go in your normal bins. Electrical equipment needs a WEEE collection, and items such as chemicals, fluorescent tubes or batteries are handled as special waste. See our commercial WEEE collection page for more.
