If your Glasgow business takes regular deliveries, cardboard builds up fast. Shops on Argyle Street and Buchanan Street, restaurants in Finnieston and warehouses around Hillington or Queenslie can fill a general recycling bin with boxes alone.
A dedicated cardboard collection keeps that volume separate and clean, which makes it easier to recycle. Skips Glasgow arranges cardboard bins and scheduled uplifts through our network of licensed local partners.
Cardboard collections sit alongside your other commercial bins, so you can keep general waste and mixed recycling bins smaller.
Collections are available across Glasgow and surrounding areas, including retail parks and industrial estates in Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire. Bin sizes and collection frequency are agreed with you, and the licensed partner provides a waste transfer note covering the service.
Why separate cardboard?
Card is one of the dry recyclables Scottish businesses must keep out of general waste under the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012. Clean, dry cardboard has good recycling value, and collecting it on its own avoids it being spoiled by food or liquids from other waste.
For businesses producing modest amounts, a mixed recycling bin may be enough. Where boxes dominate, a dedicated cardboard bin is usually the tidier option.
It also keeps shop floors and stock rooms clear.
Getting the most from your cardboard bin
Flattening boxes is the single biggest saving – unflattened cartons fill a bin with air. A few other tips:
- Remove plastic wrap, polystyrene and excess tape where you can
- Keep cardboard dry; wet or greasy card is harder to recycle
- Store bins under cover or with lids closed in Glasgow’s wet weather
Pizza boxes and other food-soiled card should normally go in general waste unless your partner advises otherwise.
Bins left open in the rain quickly fill with soggy card.
Large volumes and one-off clear-outs
Retailers often see spikes around stock changes and the run-up to Christmas. If your volumes rise for a few weeks, the collection frequency can usually be increased. For a one-off build-up after a shop fit or move, a waste uplift may be quicker than adding bins.
Tell us roughly how many boxes you handle in a typical week when you ask for a quote. That helps the partner recommend the right number of bins, from a single 360-litre bin for a small shop to several 1,100-litre containers for a busy warehouse or distribution unit.

Do I need a separate cardboard bin or will mixed recycling do?
Either can meet the requirement to separate recyclables. A dedicated cardboard bin suits businesses with lots of boxes; mixed recycling suits those with a smaller blend of paper, card, plastics and cans.
Does cardboard have to be flattened?
It should be. Flattened card takes up far less space, so you get more in each bin and need fewer uplifts. Bins packed with unflattened boxes fill quickly and may need more frequent collections.
Can you collect cardboard from a city-centre shop with no yard?
Often, yes. Many city-centre businesses use smaller bins stored inside and presented at agreed times. Tell us about your access when you request a quote and the partner will suggest a workable arrangement.
Can I bale my cardboard instead?
Some larger retailers and warehouses use balers. If you already bale card, mention it when you enquire, as collection of baled cardboard may be possible depending on the partner covering your area.
